Marine Aquarium and Regional Centre (MARC) is one of the 16th regional centres of Zoological Survey of India in Digha under Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. The centre is established in 1989. The centre has two distinct wings viz. research centre and aquarium in addition to facilities for mass education to people. The research wing of the centre started functioning in 1989; however, the aquarium was opened for public since 2003. It was set up with the objectives of conducting education and awareness programme through the marine aquarium which is an integral part of MARC and providing infrastructure facility for conducting professional training course on coastal and marine ecosystem.



The Marine Aquarium and Regional Centre is located within an area of 6.5 acres on the Foreshore Road of Digha town, having a building area of nearly 6000 m2. As of date the scientists of this centre have contributed to the understanding of the coastal ecology of the areas. Besides, the centre is also catering to the needs of research workers, students, and scientists, both from Government and Non-Government agencies and others in the field of marine biology.
MARC was selected as a venue for the first in the British training programme on Integrated Coastal Zone Management in 1996 & 1997 and also for the first West Bengal Government, Department of Ocean Development, and Government of India supported programme on ICZM. MARC, Digha located about 180 km away from the capital city of Kolkata offers a unique facility, the largest of its kind in coastal India.
