Marine Biology Regional Centre (MBRC) was established on March 1, 1973 in Chennai, from where it was a Marine Survey Unit of Zoological Survey of India, Kolkata, since its inception under the first five year plan in April 1959. Established with the mandate to studying the Marine Biodiversity of India, this centre was commissioned to assessing the biodiversity in marine ecosystems within the 2.02 million sq km EEZ of India - from reef types such as fringing, barrier and atolls, to seagrasses, mangroves, estuaries, sand dunes, salt marshes and extensive beaches in addition to the oceanic habitats, submerged reefs and mounts
