About us

Estuarine Biology Regional Centre was established in 1980 during the sixth five year plan to conduct investigations on the faunal diversity of Estuaries, Backwaters, Lagoons and mangrove ecosystems of India. Estuaries are dynamic and transitional ecotones, where sea and river meet together and get blessed with the fertile flows of both sea and river. These fascinating biotopes are one of the most productive ecosystems of the world The mangroves not only help to protect the coastline from natural calamities, but also provide shelter to myriad of faunal elements.

Area under Jurisdiction

Since important estuaries and mangrove ecosystems of the country are located in the East coast and Bay of Bengal the station has been set up in Orissa.
