About us

Freshwater Biology Regional Centre was established under 5th Five -Year Plan of Govt. of India in February 1979 at Hyderabad in order to study the Limnological and bio-ecological aspects of the freshwater bodies, wetlands of national and international ( Ramsar sites) importance.

Area under Jurisdiction

The jurisdiction of the station covers the fresh water bodies of the country.

  • Limnological studies of : Hussain Sagar Lake, Osman Sagar Lake, Himayat Sagar, Mir Alam Lake, Saroor Nagar Lake, Freshwater bodies on Bombay, Highway
  • Bio-monitoring of Inland waters of Hyderabad: Indira Sagar, Fox Sagar and Nacharam

Publications

More than 50 publications are brought out by the station on the limnological aspects of the water bodies.

Museum

Museum host exhibits of representative specimens of all fresh water animals viz. crustaceans, molluscs fishes, amphibians, birds, reptiles, mammals etc, Models, exhibits, photographs and display of different types of wetlands like Crater lake, Oxbow lake and Loktak lake etc., exhibiting their geomorphologic diversity will be highlighted. This museum will give a comprehensive idea of diversity of animal fauna occurring in Indian wetlands for understanding the different fresh water wetland ecosystems.

Library

The library of the station holds 5415 books and a good number of journals to cater the needs of the fresh water biologists.
