About us

Gangetic Plains Regional Centre (GPRC) was set up at Patna in March, 1965 under Third Five Year Plan to survey, ascertain and augment knowledge on the faunal resources of Gangetic Plains.

Area under Jurisdiction

The jurisdiction of the Centre is extended to the coastal areas of India to acquire desired species for display and research.

  • Faunal Diversity with special reference to prawns and crabs in relation to physico-chemical parameters.
  • Coastal Invertebrates of Digha and adjoining areas.
  • Study of Marine Invertebrates from some Coastal areas of India
  • Status survey of Marine Reptiles (Turtles and Snakes)
  • Periodical determination of heavy metals, pollutants, hydrocarbons and insecticides in Sea water samples in and around Digha.

Publications

More than 20 research papers have been published from the station pertaining to various groups of marine animals.

Aquarium

MARC has largest inbuilt marine aquarium in the country and equipped with sea water circulation system and advanced filtration unit. The aquarium has 24 big sized (15x10x10’) marine tanks and 8 fresh water (3x2x2’) tanks which are equipped with compressed air supply, light and regulated supply of inflow & outflow of water. The aquarium has three divisions of exhibits. The species of conservation importance, the local & curious species and freshwater species.

Visitor

Digha being one of the major tourist attractions in West Bengal, hundreds of visitors make it a point to view the Aquarium every day. The aquarium is opened to public on all working days from 9.3 0 A.M. to 6 P. M.

Library

The library of the station houses 1138 books and 295 volumes of various journals.
