About us

Marine Biology Regional Centre was established on 1st March 1973 during the Fifth Five Year Plan to promote Marine faunistic research.

Area under Jurisdiction

Marine Biological Station enjoys special status in the Zoological Survey of India with vast area under its jurisdiction encompassing the Indian Seas in the east and west coasts of Indian mainland and the seas around Andaman Nicobar and Lakshadweep group of Islands.

More than 300 research papers have been published by the scientists of the station in journals of national and international repute.

Museum

Marine aquarium provides an excellent facility for the visitors to look at the beautiful creatures of the seas as if they are in their own natural habitat and to create awareness for the conservation of the rich and varied marine biodiversity of our country. The aquarium hall covers an area of 2800 sq. feet. It has eighteen rectangular tanks of 8 feet length arranged with working space along the walls with front viewing glass.

Library

The library of the Marine Biological Station holds 2580 books on marine sciences. The library subscribes 33 journals of which 12 are Indian and 21 are International.
