About us

The centre was established during the Second Five Year Plan in September 1959 to explore the faunal resources of Deccan Plateau, Northern Western Ghats in Maharashtra and up to Goa in South, covering varied ecosystems.

Area under Jurisdiction

The jurisdiction of the centre is spread over states of Maharashtra (35 districts, encompassing 6 National Parks, 35 Wildlife Sanctuaries and three Tiger Reserves), Goa (two districts with one National Park and six Wildlife Sanctuaries), North Karnataka (four districts) and Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

Museum

The museum of the station displays 533 examples of the varied regional fauna including crustaceans, arachnids, insects, molluscs, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.

Library

The library holds 4096 books on various aspects of Zoology and 25 Indian and 15 Foreign Journals are being subscribed.
