Emeritus Scientist
It is obvious that there are gaps in knowledge in a large
number of animal groups. Due to limited number of in-service
expertise, to bridge the gap ZSI is currently engaging
superannuated scientists as emeritus scientist for a limited
period to take up studies on such groups. It is proposed to
increase the strength of such workers so as to train the new
scientists on one hand and to get immense benefits of the
expertise of renowned scientists on the other.
In addition to the updating of its own scheduled species,
ZSI also is invited regularly to review proposals submitted
by other countries to CITES. In fact most data sent to CITES
by Asian and South-East Asian countries are invariably sent
to ZSI for review before placing it at the next Conference
of Parties.
The other important aspect of work that ZSI does in this
connection is the help it renders to the enforcement staff
in different parts of the country and the Customs
authorities at the various ports for identification of
wildlife and their products in trade. The work gains much
more importance due to the task of ZSI in identification of
confiscated wildlife products and the related research that
is involved in final identification.
